ESTRELLAS DE BUENA VISTA
Directed by the legendary tres player, Pancho Amat, founding member of Manguaré, which would become one of the leading ensembles within the nueva trova movement. Amat was winner of the National Critics' Award at Cubadisco in 1995 and Best Traditional Music Album Award Cubadisco 2002, and winner of the National Music Award in 2010. Amat worked with Oscar D'León, Pablo Milanés, Ry Cooder, Silvio Rodríguez, Omara Portuondo and many more. Estrellas de Buena Vista was formed to continue the tradition of Buena Vista Social Club. The band features 16 musicians, including 8 original members from Buena Vista Social Club. The singers Carlos Calunga and Lázaro Villa are from the new generation, and spark a fresh energy to the Cuban evergreens. The repertoire are the classicals from the golden age of Cuban music, fusing traditional rhythms and songs with contemporary influences, played by some of Cubas greatest musicians. When the orchestra performs in Cuba, the theaters are full of loving enthusiastic audiences, as can be heard on this live recording! For this show, the band also invited some special guests, the singers Alain Pérez, Mayito Rivera and Ma Victoria.
The orchestra has gained national and international recognition for its virtuosity and for transmitting the joy and vibrant spirit of Cuban music.
